Finding space

Some people clearly can become overburdened and need support to cope. But for many people, the way out of being too busy lies in their own choices. You can choose to create sanctuary in your life. Here are some tips on how to go about doing that.

Physical Space

A good place to start is the way you use physical space at home. Take a corner and make it into a sacred space by placing some objects on a table or wall: a candle, a picture, a beautiful stone, a photo of loved ones, and, as your faith allows, the Bible or other sacred book open at a text that inspires you. Such a space can remind you physically of the need to create spiritual space.

Spiritual Space

Choose to spend some time, preferably each day, either in meditation (see Five tips to meditate) or in slow reading (see how to read slowly).

But how can I find the time?

Build it into a routine; try one of the following:

  • get up five minutes earlier to spend time enjoying one of the above
  • on your way to or from work, call into a church
  • at lunch time, find a quiet place to meditate
  • at night, read a sacred text before sleeping
